In the area of traffic safety, the department's record is unmatched in law enforcement. The department was recognized three years in a row by AAA for its traffic safety program and received its highest distinction, the Platinum Award. In 2003 the Governor's Traffic Safety Committee and New York State Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) awarded Police Officer Michael Hickey the Top Cop Award for his efforts in D.W.I. enforcement. No traffic safety program would be complete without a prevention component, so in 2003 the department instituted a Child Passenger Safety Program. The Department educates over 100 parents, grandparents and guardians in the proper use and installation of car seats each year.
