Prior to our entry into World War II, a local civil defense unit was formed in the Village of Garden City. This unit became a police and fire fighting auxiliary. Instruction in both areas continued regularly. At the conclusion of the war, this unit continued as auxiliary police under Lt. Tom McGee of the regular police department. Instruction in police work and first aid continued.
In November, 1952, at its regular monthly meeting Police Chief S. Vauderwater, the Mayor, and several board members suggested a more positive attachment to the police department.
The Village would supply uniforms and training and the members would perform specific functions with limited authority as the Garden City Reserve Police. After several years the Garden City Reserve Police became the Garden City Special Police. |
